Short-term Dental and Vision Coverage
Need short-term or interim coverage? We can help!
-
Short-term coverage may be an option when Marketplace enrollment is not possible for one of the following reasons:
-
You are in need of coverage outside of your region's Open Enrollment Period and you do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period;
-
You have a pending Marketplace enrollment but need an interim policy to bridge the gap in coverage until the first day of an upcoming month when your policy is due to start;
-
You have a pending employer group health plan and need temporary coverage until the employer's coverage begins;
-
You want an alternative to ACA coverage, and don't mind exposure to a deductible or having some limitations on your health insurance.
Here are some key points about short-term policies:
-
Pre-existing health issues are not covered and you will have to attest to health history questions on the application.
-
There will be a deductible that must be met before the policy kicks in for covered expenses. You may be able to pay a higher monthly premium in exchange for a lower plan deductible.
-
There will be an annual limit on covered expenses.
-
Enrollments can be made at any time and coverage can be effective as soon as the next day.
-
Pricing is based on age, whether or not you smoke, and your plan choice.
-
You will need to adhere to your plan's local network for covered services--and there could be other network restrictions.
-
It is important to note that even if you are able to save money on a short-term policy versus a major medical plan, there could be important tradeoffs that limit how you are able to use this type of short-term coverage.

Dental
We are often asked for our thoughts regarding the value of standalone dental coverage, as most Marketplace health plans only include pediatric dental coverage for children 18 years old and younger. Our honest opinion is that it can be exceedingly difficult to find good value in the dental market.
That said, there are many companies that offer dental-only policies for direct, stand-alone enrollment. You may also bundle separate dental plans with your health coverage if you are enrolling in Marketplace coverage or a short-term plan.
In our experience, it is most important to verify that your dentist will accept your dental insurance prior to signing on with a new dental carrier. This will prevent headaches and confusion in the future. We are happy to discuss dental options with clients who are interested in them as additions to a health plan.
